Fuel and Oil Tanks

Underground storage of substances such as fuel and oil can have serious environmental impacts on ground and groundwater if not well managed.

You may be required to install monitoring wells and secondary containment, especially if you apply to fit a new tank or apply for a lease as a new permit holder.

Above ground tanks must be covered and bunded and protected from hazards such as ignition sources and reversing vehicles.

  • Monitor underground tanks and surrounding soil to detect leaks and potential contamination.
  • Locate above ground storage tanks in a roofed and bunded area that does not drain to the stormwater system. A spill kit should be available for the fuel area. A lockable tap may help in preventing spills or leaks.
