Effective Use of Energy and Resources

Energy is a variable, not fixed, overhead.  Lower running costs can very quickly make up for a slightly higher up-front capital cost.

You can often make big savings and create a more comfortable work environment by reducing the amount of power used in lighting, heating and cooling your business and operating equipment.

  • Encourage simple practices such as turning off lights and compressors when not in use.
  • Regularly drain air compressors and check hoses and connections for leaks.
  • Consider improving building insulation and installing energy efficient globes, zoned switching and task lighting.
  • Consider the use of waste oil heaters to warm workshops, taking into account the running costs of alternative types of heaters.
  • Incorporate energy efficient features into the design of new buildings, such as solar orientation and natural lighting and ventilation.
